is it alright if i ask what a surfacer does??

Sure! The surfacer's job is to apply textures, shaders, and material attributes to objects in the scene. Essentially, if a table is supposed to be made of wood, it's up to the surfacer to make that surface look like wood by applying a texture, color, and determining factors like specularity and scattering. It's a little more complex than that, and I'm by no means a surfacing artist, but I hope that makes sense!
